The host of Channel Nine’s
Location Location, Deborah Hutton, shares some memorable moments from her life with us.
“I’ve always had the philosophy that you should live every day as though it’s your last, and make the most of every moment. During my life, I’ve had some incredible opportunities come my way and have always strived to give 100 per cent. I figure if you keep yourself happy, be kind to those around you, give back wherever you can, and have a good laugh along the way, that will do me fine. As Oscar Wilde so brilliantly said, ‘Life is too important to be taken seriously’.

I’d decided to leave high school halfway through the fifth form, and I’d left home as well (my poor mum). At 16, the cover of Cosmopolitan was my first job as a model, and I was thrilled to bits to see the blow-up poster outside newsagencies. I suppose this was the first proper indication that there might be a career ahead.
1989
One of the luckiest breaks I’ve ever had was working for the Myer/Grace Bros department stores. Our association spanned 13 years and, in that time, I learnt many of the skills that come so easily to me now. During that period I met and worked with so many interesting people, including Omar Sharif, Joan Collins, Jeffrey Archer, Oscar de la Renta and, one of the dearest men to cross my path, Michael Caine.
1991
Harry M Miller and I had met briefly years earlier, then, after he’d managed me for some time, we got together and formed more than a professional relationship. It was around this time we decided to enjoy five weeks overseas together, starting off in LA, where we visited some old friends of mine. With all we’ve been through, and all we’ve shared, Harry and I will always have a special bond.
1995
I was the beauty editor of The Australian Women’s Weekly, I had a full-time schedule as the face of Myer/Grace Bros and I was hosting Channel Nine’s lifestyle programme Looking Good. My personal life was also a whirlwind and, with all that stress, I ended up with a disc protruding against my spinal cord. For two weeks I lay in traction in hospital, then I had to have two discs fused. In hindsight, it’s one of the better things that has happened to me. You re-evaluate your life, sort out your priorities and find a better balance.
