Think twice before passing up your morning cereal in favour of Vegemite on toast — new research shows low-sugar cereal varieties are a sure-fire way to lose weight.

It's in most people's kitchen cupboards already, but we often overlook measly cereal when reaching for the peanut butter or Vegemite. Next time you're debating over what to put on your toast, think about this: a bowl to low-sugar, wholegrain cereal is not only filling and good for you, but will also help you to shed those unwanted kilos. It doesn't get much better than that!

How it works
A study in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association revealed that women who include high-fibre cereal as part of their low-calorie eating plans will lose weight without losing important nutrients.

Check the box
This is really important: before heading to the check-out make sure you carefully read the labels. Just because the box says 'organic' or 'heart healthy' doesn't mean it's not packed with sugar and carbs. Think about it, if this is the case you might as well be eating a handful of biscuits for breakfast.

What to look for
For a healthy, nutritious start to the day go for cereals with at least five grams of fibre per serving and less than 10 grams of sugar per 100 calories.
