Oprah’s ongoing weight battle has important lessons for all of us. Kate Fitzpatrick reveals what they are.

She’s the queen of daytime TV and arguably the most famous woman in the world. With a fortune estimated at US$2.7 billion, Oprah has personal assistants, trainers and chefs, yet the talk show host recently admitted her weight had once again ballooned to 90kg.

It’s the not the first time Oprah has weighed this much, nor is she at her heaviest – that was in 1992 when, aged 38, she tipped the scales at 107kg. Both are a contrast to the 1988 season-opening appearance on her own show, when Oprah unveiled a size-10 figure in a pair of slinky Calvin Klein jeans.

As her friend, trainer and weight-loss guru Bob Greene says, ‘Oprah’s struggle with her weight has become almost mythic.’ So, after more than 30 years of losing and gaining weight (and losing and gaining it again), we reckon Ms Winfrey knows a thing or two about weight loss. At the very least, we should be able to learn from her mistakes.
