Healthy food for families

Monday, May 2, 2011
"If you can't manage to buy all organic produce, make sure you wash non-organic fruits and vegies well, rinse non-organic grains and legumes and use fresh water to cook them in."

Question:

I've been trying to eat better for a while now but am having some trouble. Just about every food contains harmful chemicals and food additives, even the respected stuff is just chemicals with a food flavour added. Vegetables and fruits contain trace elements of pesticides and other repellents, they claim they are safe but independent studies show otherwise. How can we be sure we are really feeding ourselves and our loved ones right without growing our own food?

Response:

The best way to make sure you and your family's diet is made up of healthy food, free from chemical additives, or high levels of refined sugar, fat and sodium, is to avoid anything processed and packaged. Instead you should choose fresh, nutritious, unprocessed foods that are in their natural state. Also by choosing organic produce you can be sure it will be free of any chemical additives or pesticide or herbicide residue.

If you can't manage to buy all organic produce, make sure you wash non-organic fruits and vegies well, rinse non-organic grains and legumes and use fresh water to cook them in. Thin, delicate skinned fruits such as berries and tomatoes can more easily absorb pesticides, so you should ideally buy these organic. Cook healthy meals at home from fresh nutritious ingredients, instead of eating out, or getting takeaway too often.
