Peak health means flat tummies...

This is where detoxing can help you with your weight-loss. By helping your body to flush out harmful toxins you are eliminating excess fluid and gas forming foods, which makes us feel bloated and uncomfortable.

By eating extra fibre and low-fat high energy meals, you will find that not only is your body looking and feeling great -but is losing weight too.

Your digestive system and bowels will be working to digest foods well and rid them healthily from the body. Gone are the hidden fats, sugars and salt that is present in pre-packed convenience foods, which cunningly pile on the kilos.

You can up your fish quota with yummy things like a small tin of anchovies; a tin of tuna in brine or a medium grilled salmon steak - and still be sticking to a detoxing diet.

Detox expert Vicky Pennington explains: "Just because you are detoxing there's no reason to deprive yourself of food, providing it's fresh and natural. Try to avoid dairy products and red meat, as both are difficult to digest, coffee and alcohol dehydrate the body, and sweets and chocolate create an energy slump."

Imagination and versatility is the key to detoxing - and this is where your healthy soups, stews and juices come into their own.

Try adding chilli, cayenne, lemongrass, ginger (raw or powdered), garlic, watercress, balsamic vinegar, seaweed and grain mustard to your foods - to really boost up the flavour and to maximise the tonic effect of your recipes.

Snack on fresh vegetable sticks and dried fruits, and add huge bowls of salads, steamed, roasted or boiled vegetables to your grilled white meats, fish and shellfish.

Fresh fruit and porridge could be a good way to start the day - and be sure to prepare your own packed lunches with brown rice salads brimming with capsicums, spring onions and beetroot. Take your own herbal teas with you wherever you go.

With all the extra energy that detoxing gives you, you could well find that you feel less tired, and the idea of starting more exercise, dance classes, new hobbies and interests seems appealing.

Of course, the more you exercise the more you can afford those special treats. But remember, until you decided to stop your detox try not to give in to that glass of wine, chocolate bar or bag of crisps. Add an extra slice of fish, some exotic fruit or even buy yourself a lovely new lipstick or book instead of giving in to toxic temptation.

When you decide you've detoxed enough, you can reward yourself with a well-earned treat. But don't over do it though, or you could undo all the lovely zip and zing your detox plan has given you!

I found the article quite interesting, I'd always thought that detoxing was some new-age type therapy which involved copious amounts of green tea, sucking on lemons and having coffee enemas and saunas. It was a relief to know that much of what I have been doing in my weight loss plan is recommended here. I especially like the idea of adding chillies to the diet
