"....it was then that I realised how important it is to be fit and healthy if you want to have a baby."
Janine

At 152kg, Janine feared her excess weight would make falling pregnant a second time difficult.

Name: Janine
Age: 36
Height: 1.66 m
Was: 152.2 kg
Lost: 72.2 kg
Weight: 80 kg

A difficult first pregnancy
Janine had struggled for more than 2 years to conceive her first child Riley, and then went through a difficult pregnancy and labour. Determined to avoid the same trials the second time around meant slimming down and improving her fitness.

Determination to conceive
“I discovered Riley’s prematurity may have been because I was overweight,” she says. “A doctor told me that carrying extra weight during pregnancy puts a burden on the cervix. When I finally fell pregnant I didn’t realise that my weight had probably made it harder to conceive. Nobody had told me.”

30kg down
At the end of 2004, Janine decided to start preparing for a second baby. This time being aware of weight impacting pregnancy, Janine joined her local Weight Watchers meeting, weighing 152kg. By the middle of 2005, Janine had lost about 30kg and was determined to lose more weight to support another pregnancy.

Pregnancy joy
Janine learned how to make healthier food choices and just over a year after joining, she had shed an amazing 73.6kg. So, in January 2006, when Janine and Mark decided to try to give Riley a sibling, she was shocked to discover she was pregnant after only 3 weeks. “I thought it would take months again,” she laughs. “It was then that I realised how important it is to be fit and healthy if you want to have a baby." The second pregnancy was a breeze and Ethan was born a week early and perfectly healthy.

Leading the way
Janine now walks, rides her exercise bike every day, and cooks meals from Weight Watchers cookbooks. She has also become a Leader and educates others about the important impact that your health and weight has on conception. “I don’t want others to go through what I went through.”

Mum on the move
Janine now nurtures a great connection with her sons, thanks to her renewed energy. “Little boys don’t want to sit and watch TV – they want to kick a ball around and go to the park. Focusing on my health gives me the energy to be who Riley and Ethan need me to be.”

This is for Becc ...YES falling pregnant can be difficult for the underweight also. Congrats to all of you on your journeys of motherhood and weight loss.
I think that she did know but weight is a big thing to battle because it usually starts from something emotional. She did something about it to make it easier next time and she succeeded...
First to Missy I would not do anything too strenuous when pregnant, walking is fine but consult your doctor and see if you can be referred to a nutritionist as you need all the healthy food and supplements you can get when pregnant. Don't go on a diet when pregnant but eat healthy. I was 126 kilos 2 years ago and am now 70. I am trying for a baby at the end of this month and hoping for something wonderful Well done Janine
well done to all of u have lost weight so u can fall pregnant and have a baby , was just wondering if being under weight would also hinder the chances of falling pregnant
Good for her! I think I have found my new inspiration! I'm only 22 but one thing in my life down the track is to be able to experience having a baby. I'm overweight and have been thinking of joining weight watchers. Ive bookmarked this story so I can come back to it when I start my diet. Good on you Janine and thank you for sharing your story.
I am 120KG and pregnant, can i still lose weight while pregnant? I dont want to lose to much i only want to lose the fatt on my arms and legs. Can i walk every day and also do weights for my arms? will it hurt the baby? thanks
i was 20kgs over weight also battling insulin resistance & boarder line PSOC, i lost 5kgs over 6 months & finally fell pregnant with the help of clomid which hadn't worked before & will welcome my first due Easter Sunday. If your struggling to get pregnant & are even just a little over weight, try to lose just a little weight & you might find it helps you too.
great for her, but how did she not realise being seriously overweight would make pregnancy difficult? it is - or should be - a very well-known fact.
