1. Breakfast at Tiffany’s
In this 1961 classic, Audrey Hepburn stars as socialite Holly Golightly. With her exquisite sense of style and grace, you’ll drool over Hepburn’s outfits as she wanders the streets of New York, perusing the windows of Tiffany’s. And smile when Holly finally falls for writer Paul.
2. Sex and the City
There's nothing like escapism … and this chick flick provides it in spades. Step into Carrie, Sam, Charlotte and Miranda’s lives, from the amazing outfits they wear, to the super-cool bars they visit, and the ups and downs of their relationships. A noughties classic.
3. Bridget Jones’s Diary
Most of us have encountered a few dilemmas like Bridget’s in our dating days! Unlucky Bridget embarks on an affair with a most unsuitable beau (delicious Hugh Grant), before realising that a daggy but lovable family friend is her perfect match.
4. Gone with the Wind
If you’re looking for an epic drama, Gone with the Wind is it. Set during the American Civil War, it’s the tumultuous tale of Scarlett O’Hara, including her famously fiery relationship with Rhett Butler. Great winter viewing – but settle in, because it’s almost four hours long.
5. When Harry Met Sally
Meg Ryan was the darling of ‘80s and ‘90s romantic comedies. Here, she stars opposite Billy Crystal, all puppy-dog eyes and tousled blonde hair. Friends Sally and Harry spend years counselling each other through relationship woes, before finally falling for one another. Unmissable scene: Sally’s infamous fake orgasm!
6. Amelie
Audrey Tautou is a delight in this unique French film, playing a whimsical Parisian waitress who does good turns for others. The music, setting, humorous and romantic moments, plus a quirky storyline make for fuzzy, feel-good winter viewing.
7. Top Gun
Check out Tom Cruise in his heyday, showing off washboard abs and aviator sunnies as fighter pilot Maverick. A love story plays out between Maverick and his instructor Charlie (Kelly McGillis), to the soundtrack of steamy ’80s hit, Take My Breath Away.
8. Pretty Woman
Who could forget Julia Roberts in the role that made her a super-star? Richard Gere plays the ultimate sophisticated ‘90s businessman, sweeping the vivacious Vivian off her feet in true Cinderella style. Love those Rodeo Drive outfits.
9. Titanic
Unashamedly cheesy, this drama nevertheless won 11 Oscars and remains the second-highest grossing film ever. On board the famous ship, happy-go-lucky Jack falls for a young lady who belongs to a world of privilege. Their affair is sadly cut short when the ship tragically goes down … sob!
10. Thelma & Louise
Best friends Thelma and Louise head off on a girls’ weekend. But no sooner have they set out, than they end up on the run from the law. A madcap road trip follows, cementing their friendship forever. Hunk moment: when a young, shirtless Brad Pitt charms Thelma!
