Sunrise co-host Melissa Doyle talks to Kate Minogue about juggling work and family.
I'm at that point where I have
a job and the kids (Talia, eight,
and Nicholas, 11) are not quite old enough to be doing stuff on their own. So the more I do to get organised the easier it is. I will often cook dinner during the day so that when we come home from school we can play in the garden. But there's always a job to be done, whether it's sorting out the kids' school notes or working on a speech for a charity function.
I'm not one of those people who loves to go to the gym. It doesn't come naturally to me. I go because I have
to look after myself. Finding something you like is important. I love going for a walk with a girlfriend, and I've just started enjoying BodyCombat classes at the gym. I quite like that whole punching and kicking thing I'm so focused on what I'm doing and concentrating on not tripping over myself that it can be quite mesmerising. I don't think of anything else for an hour.
I want my kids to see that I think it's important to stay healthy. I can't be saying to them, go to ballet or football
or eat your vegies if I'm not doing the right thing. You have got to lead
by example. So this year I promised myself I would do a bit more to look
after myself, to prioritise exercise. I was trying to go to as many gym classes as I could but then I got busy at work and everything got thrown out. Anything I do for me seems to get put in between Sunrise and the kids.
I think I'm lucky that I'm one of
those people who wake up happy.
I'm a glass half-full kind of girl.
I'm blessed I'm healthy, I've got a wonderful husband [John] and gorgeous, healthy children. But I think whatever you've got you have
to count your blessings. It's really easy to dwell on the things that can get
you down, and when I get tired I can get down but I think you have got to pick yourself up and look at what you have got and not what you don't have.
