Dutch-born actor and singer Johannes Heesters has proved it's never too late to give up the habit, declaring he has quit cigarettes just before his 107th birthday.

Heesters married German actress Simone Rethel, 61, in 1992. He told the German entertainment magazine Bunte that his love for her lead him to quit smoking three weeks ago.

"I did it for love, for my wonderful wife," he said. "She should have me as long as possible."

Heesters, spent most of his 90-year career in Germany and is most well-known for roles in the films Die Fledermaus (1946) and Bel Ami (1955).

He remains a controversial figure today, particularly in his homeland, for performing for Adolph Hitler and other leading Nazis during World War II, Reuters reported.
