Swimming for weight loss and tone

I have outlined a program below which will increase your overall fitness, speed and endurance in the water

Question:
I enjoy swimming but want to know if just swimming laps is the best way to lose weight and tone up? Can you recommend a swimming fitness program?

Answer:
Swimming is a great way to stay fit in summer as it's easy on the muscles — the water supports your body weight while you are exercising.

I have outlined a program below which will increase your overall fitness, speed and endurance in the water:

  • Warm up — 400m easy freestyle
  • Main set — 10 x 100 metre freestyle sprints with 30 seconds rest between each sprint.
  • Kick board — 400m with or without fins
  • Warm down — 200m easy backstroke

Total: 2000 metres

Don't forget to include as much walking as possible with your swimming workouts and if you would like to tone a specific muscle group, targeted exercises will really help here as well.
