Question:
I have been getting back into shape after 14 years and three children. Why is it so hard to shake the tummy and hip areas? I have lost weight and toned up everywhere, but still carry my "Michelin tube" with me. Is there a specific type of exercise to target just that area?
Answer:
Giving birth changes your body dramatically, and especially after having three children as after each birth, your stomach stretches more and more and you lose elasticity in this area. Combine this with getting older, and some parts of your body begin to annoy you!
To identify what the problem maybe, ask yourself these important questions:
Is your stomach flatter in the morning and as the day progresses, does it get bigger? This may be due to bloating and/or overeating, so in this case, it will be advisable to see a naturopath or dietician.
And are you doing a combination of cardio training and specific core/stomach exercises?
The good news is, you can target this area and the best type of exercise for your situation, is Pilates.
Pilates will focus on the external and internal deep abdominal muscles so this will strengthen and tone your stomach muscles as well as assist with your posture.
Combining Pilates with light weights for the upper and lower body, and regular cardio exercise, should allow you to see considerable improvement.
If, after doing all of the above for at least three months and you're still not seeing results, you may want to consider getting a small ''tummy tuck'', which will tighten up the loose skin in your abdominal region as this is more than likely the main problem if your body hasn't responded to the training tips above.
