Question:

How good are rowing machines for exercise and weight loss? Could you suggest an exercise routine I could use? I am a 32-year-old man and go to the gym three times a week and am not sure what to do on them to help me lose weight.

Answer:

Rowing machines are a great upper-body cardio machine. Whereas equipment such as treadmills, exercise bikes and cross trainers predominately use the legs and lower body, rowing machines use the arms and upper torso for the work-out.

Most of the muscle mass on our bodies is in the legs so this is why using treadmills and exercise bikes are easier. Activities such as rowing and swimming use the upper body so there is more load on arms and shoulders.

Here are three different rowing work-outs you can use to vary your routine and help you get fit and lose weight. Don't forget to include strength training in the gym as this will help your overall strength, fitness and weight loss.

  1. Ninety seconds easy followed by 30 seconds sprint. Repeat 15 times. Total of 30 minutes.
  2. Ten minutes easy then 10 minutes hard then 10 minutes easy. Total of 30 minutes.
  3. Three minutes easy followed by two minutes hard. Repeat six times. Total of 30 minutes.
