Question:
I am 29 years old and was diagnosed with osteoporosis when I was still in school. I also currently have back problems. I am unsure what to do when it comes to exercise. Are you able to suggest some exercise that would be good for me?
Answer:
As you have already been diagnosed with osteoporosis you will need to exercise with caution, but being active will help you build strength back into your bones. You should avoid jarring exercises such as running, but all of the examples below will really help you to get fit and healthy again without placing a lot of strain on your bones and joints.
You could try:
- fast walking;
- swimming or water aerobics;
- cycling;
- light weights (under supervision initially); and
- stretching.
Don't overdo it and you should see your doctor or physiotherapist before returning to exercise.
