Question:

I'm a 27 yr old female and have just started working out 3 x a week (cardio and toning sessions). I just want to know what I should be snacking on before I work out. My sessions are after work at 6.30pm. Also what is good to eat after working out?

Answer:

It's very important what you eat pre- and post-training as this will determine your energy and recovery levels.

If you eat a main meal make sure it's at least three to four hours before you train but if it's just a pre-workout snack then eating this 15 to 60 minutes before exercise will be fine.

What are some good pre training snack ideas?

  • Liquid meal protein drink
  • Fruit smoothie
  • Glass of milk
  • Sports/energy bar
  • Cereal with milk
  • Yoghurt

After training it's crucial to try and eat within 60 minutes of completing your workout. This is the ideal window to replenish your energy stores and stimulate muscle growth and recovery for the following day.

Recovery is just as important as the training as the faster you recover, the faster you will see progress and results.
