Recurrent thrush

Friday, January 1, 2010

Question:

What would you suggest I do to get rid of thrush? I get it monthly due to changes in hormone levels. I have seen many doctors and even tried taking a Canesten treatment for four weeks but nothing seems to help.

Answer:

Thrush is an extremely uncomfortable condition and can be very persistent. Are you taking the contraceptive pill? This can sometimes be a cause of thrush. If you are, maybe you could go off it for a few months to get this under control.

Thrush is caused by a candida yeast overgrowth. A diet high in sugar feeds it and makes it thrive so a yeast-free, sugar-free diet can certainly help. Try not eating any bread, sugar, honey, Vegemite, jam, cheese, beer, wine, dried fruit and very sweet fruit such as grapes, for a month, and then re-introduce these foods very slowly, while continuing to limit sugars in the diet.

Taking a probiotic such as lactobacillus acidophilus and lactobacillus bifidus is necessary to help kill off the candida.

It can be very helpful to visit your naturopath as there are very successful homeopathic remedies for this condition.
