Do lingual braces cause a lisp?

Question:

I'm considering getting lingual braces in May but I'm getting married in September and I'm a little scared I will have a lisp. Do you think I will be used to them by then or should I wait?

Answer:

Lingual braces can be uncomfortable and cause lisping and ulceration of the tongue. Have you considered Invisalign? This system of orthodontics utilises a series of clear plastic aligners that are nearly invisible and importantly are removable, so they won't interfere with your social commitments, such as your wedding!
