Are teeth whiteners effective?

Question:

I would like to use a teeth whitening product bought from a local supermarket or pharmacy. I would like to know if it will deteriorate my teeth in long run, if I use the product on a regular basis.

Answer:

If you look at any credible consumer-based or dental literature, you will realise that over-the-counter whiteners are virtually ineffective. They do contain hydrogen peroxide gel though, so although they will not effectively whiten your teeth at all, they can damage your gums, especially because the one-size-fits-all mouth trays fit so poorly as to allow leakage of this gel onto the soft tissues.

Using the product on a regular basis will not necessarily have deleterious effect on your teeth, but most definitely will on your wallet. It really confounds me that people are prepared to spend money on products that are consistently proven to not work.
