Breast reduction to help resolve back problems

Monday, January 25, 2010
"Pregnancy and breastfeeding will however alter the volume and shape of the breasts and at the end of breastfeeding the shape may not return to the way it was."

Question:

I'm only 19 years of age and already an F cup. I get massive muscle knots all the way from my lower back to the crown of my head which causes headaches all the time. I also get other muscle knots all over my back and my lower back is really tender.

My rib cage and lower back are also inflamed. I believe this is all to do with my big breasts and I am now considering a breast reduction. Would this help my back problems? Would it be better to wait 'til after I have children to get the surgery done?

Answer:

A breast reduction is procedure to consider if the size and weight of the breasts are limiting your enjoyment of life or causing discomfort. The procedure should be considered when the breasts have stopped growing, so as to minimise the chance of needing to have the procedure repeated if there is further growth.

People have the procedure at all ages and it is possible in most cases to breastfeed after a breast reduction so that should not stop people having the procedure prior to having children.

The pregnancy and breastfeeding will however alter the volume and shape of the breasts and at the end of breastfeeding the shape may not return to the way it was, and this may be a consideration.

In all, if they are causing pain and discomfort consider the procedure now, as I do not have a patient who has regretted the decision to have surgery as their enjoyment of life is so much better after the surgery.
