Safe treatment for a birthmark

Monday, May 30, 2011
"All of the treatment options are safe, but the best result depends on the type of birthmark."

Question:

I have a birthmark on my upper arm that I am embarrassed about and try to keep it covered up. Is there any safe treatment that can be done to remove it? How much would something like that cost?

Answer:

Birthmarks come in a number of types and different treatment options exist for each. All of the treatment options are safe, but the best result depends on the type of birthmark. For vascular birthmarks, that is red or purple patches, laser is the best option. For flat brown patches laser is also the best option. And for raised brown and often hairy birthmarks, surgical excision will give the best result. The key is to have an expert opinion as to what type the birthmark is and then be advised on the best treatment. All of these treatment options, though, will be safe.
