Finally, there's a disposable nappy that is environmentally friendly and good for your baby, as well.
The long-running debate about which is better cloth or disposable has been a talking point for mums since the throw-away variety was first introduced. Everyone wants to do the best for their baby, but more and more mums are now also mindful of the damaging effects that mountains of nappies are doing to the environment. First-time mum Vanessa Layton, who trialled the eco-friendly Bamboo Nature brand while living in Europe, says there's now another, even better, alternative with the convenience of a throw-away and the eco-friendly aspect of a cloth.
Finding an alternative
When Vanessa first returned home to Australia with her new bundle of joy after having lived in Europe, she was surprised to find that "eco" disposable nappies were seen as a niche product. In Europe, they were a mainstay on supermarket shelves, and yet in Australia, finding a fail-safe eco brand proved near impossible.
And so she set up Nordic Nappies and went about importing and distributing her favourite Danish brand, Bamboo Nature, here in Australia. This range of eco-friendly disposables met all of Vanessa's requirements and they're the only eco variety to have been awarded the prestigious Nordic Swan Eco Label, the eco label that's been given the tick of approval by the governments of five Scandinavian countries.
A win for everyone
When you're looking for an eco-friendly nappy, there are a few must-haves that immediately jump straight to the top of the list. The first, and most obvious, is that they're biodegradable. Bamboo Nature gets a tick of approval here, as about 75 percent of Bamboo Nature's nappies are biodegradable, compared to around 35 percent of standard disposables.
They should also be kind to your baby's skin, work well (meaning no leaks!) and be affordable. Again, ticks all around for Bamboo Nature. In fact, Vanessa's nappies are the most affordable of all eco disposables, they don't leak or split and they're great for day and night use. Plus, a breathable backsheet that allows air to circulate, reducing moisture, means they're kinder to babies' skin.
Giving the environment a helping hand
Most new mums and dads spend hours weighing up which pram to get and which steriliser is best, yet few give much thought to which nappies to buy surprising, given a nappy is the closest thing to your baby's silky smooth skin.
Need another reason to reconsider your choice of nappy? Well, here are some eye-opening statistics: in Australia alone, approximately 800 million disposable nappies are delivered to landfill sites each year, and they take up to 500 years to break down. Bamboo Nature, on the other hand, are eco friendly in every sense of the word they have a biodegradable core containing biodegradable starch granules, have fully recyclable packaging and an eco-friendly manufacturing process, which means a lower eco footprint.
It's easy to see why Vanessa's hooked on this new-to-Australia eco brand. Kinder to the environment and kinder to your baby's skin choosing your baby's nappies should now be the easiest choice new mums have to make.
